Design trends…Is a single-page website better than a multi-page website?

The online jungle is growing very fast and websites start to look better and better. The competition is huge now and in most cases the difference between a successful website and a less successful website is the user interface.

What are the design trends now?

Analysing carefully some of the most popular websites, the most noticeable change compared to few years ago is that skeuomorphism is gone……. or almost gone.

What is skeuomorphism?

Skeuomorphism refers to a design principle in which design cues are taken from the physical world. This term is most frequently applied to user interfaces, where much of the design has traditionally aimed to recall the real world. For example using leather or paper patterns in user interfaces.

Apple was one of the companies which used this trend a lot. Apps such as the Calendar, Notes, Contacts etc they were all using skeuomorphic design. Now it looks like Apple is migrating slowly its apps away from this trend. Gradients are almost gone too and are replaced by flat colors.

Designers became more brave and interfaces became more colorful. Sometimes they are too colorful and for my safety I use a pair of sunglasses.

Icons also changed. They are a lot simpler, usually just an outline and no more patterns.

What is a single-page website?

This is usually a very long web page divided in different sections and each of these section replaces a separate page. This type of website does not usually need a menu and provides a unique experience for the user because it does not require any clicks to navigate from one page to another. All you need to do is scroll.

How and when to use a single-page website?

There are pros and cons for this type of websites. To get the best results you should take into consideration the following things:

  • The complexity –  For me a single-page website is like a business card. It has to be simple and easy to read.  Now imagine having a single-page news website. You will have to scroll forever and will become annoying for your users.
  • The content – The sections of a single-page website should be like a pyramid and keep the user reading more and more as he scrolls. Even though a single-page website contains multiple sections, for the user all these sections are still a single page. You should avoid adding too much text and make the content engaging.

Advantages

  • Reduced navigation time
  • Easy to find the information you’re looking for
  • Will increase the user conversion rate
  • More interactive
  • More creative
  • Easy to make it fully responsive

Disadvantages

  • Will increase the page loading time
  • More challenging to design
  • Not possible to share just one section of a single-page website
  • Hard to track how users are using your website with Google Analytics or its competitors.
